Layering for Cold-Weather Training: A Practical Guide
The three-layer system, and why it works
Base layer (next to skin): moisture-wicking, close-fitting, its whole job is moving sweat away from your body rather than trapping it. Mid layer: insulation — fleece, wool, or a light puffer, trapping the warm air your body generates. Outer layer: wind and water protection — a shell that blocks the elements without necessarily adding much warmth on its own.
The overdressing mistake almost everyone makes
Dressing for how it feels standing still, rather than how it will feel five minutes into a run, is the single most common cold-weather layering mistake. A reasonable rule many runners use: dress as if it's about 10-15°C (15-20°F) warmer than the actual temperature, since you'll generate significant body heat once moving. Overdressing leads to overheating and excess sweat, which then cools uncomfortably once you slow down or stop.
When a vest beats a full jacket
A vest adds core warmth — protecting your torso, where a lot of heat loss happens — without the sleeve bulk that can restrict arm swing or trap excess heat in your arms, which generate less core-relevant warmth. For temperatures in the moderate-cold range (roughly 0-10°C / 32-50°F) where a full jacket often means overheating, a vest over a long-sleeve base layer is frequently the better-calibrated choice.
Extremities lose heat fast
Hands, ears, and head lose heat disproportionately to their size — a hat or headband and light gloves often make more practical difference to comfort than an extra torso layer, and they're easy to remove and stash mid-run if you warm up.
