Compression Leggings: What the Numbers on the Tag Actually Mean
Compression is a spectrum, not a switch
"Compression leggings" gets used as a single category, but the actual firmness varies enormously between a light seamless everyday pair and a graduated-compression legging built for recovery. There's no industry-wide scale printed on every tag — what one brand calls "medium compression" can feel like another brand's "high." Treat any specific claim as relative to that brand's own line, not an absolute measurement you can compare across listings.
What denier actually tells you
Denier measures the thickness of the individual fibers, and by extension how opaque and durable the fabric is. Lower denier (under about 100) tends to feel lighter and more breathable but is more prone to going sheer under stretch; higher denier (150+) is thicker, more opaque, and generally more durable through repeated wear and washing — at some cost to breathability.
Four-way stretch vs. two-way stretch
Two-way stretch fabric gives in one direction (usually side to side); four-way stretch gives both horizontally and vertically, which matters for anything involving squats, lunges, or overhead reaching. Most dedicated training leggings are four-way stretch — it's worth confirming on anything marketed for general wear instead of specifically for training.
What to actually check before buying
Waistband height and where it sits relative to your natural waist matters more for comfort than most other specs combined — high-waist styles vary in how high "high" actually is between brands. Panel construction (how many fabric panels make up the leg) affects both fit and durability; more panels generally means a closer, more engineered fit but can also mean more seams to potentially chafe against.
